WINS FOR TAT & BAZ, LAWMAN & PC
27th May
Two pairs comps played over the bank holiday weekend, at King Alfred on Sunday, and Dalton CC on
Monday. John Reilly & Barry Lowden breezed through the field on Sunday, rarely troubled all
the way up to and including the final which they won 21-4 against Simon Perry
and Paul Thompson. On Monday Tat & Baz's challenge was ended by Graham Law &
Paul Curwen in the 2nd round. The Lindal pair went on to beat homesters John McGourty & Roy
Whatley in the final, 21-12. Good performance by a promising young bowler
on the day - Lorna Rigg who led consistently all day in
partnering her dad Graham to the semi finals.

MILLSY AND MO ON
FIRE
14th May 2007

This years King Alfred Open Mixed Pairs, sponsored by Barrow Central
Joiners, was won by home pair Keith & Maureen Mills, showing that Keith is
not only a good green keeper but a class bowler as well.
In the final the
Millsy’s met fellow home bowlers Tony & Margaret Whitehouse. It has to said
that the Millsy’s fought through the tougher half of the draw with a semi
final against Tony & Janet Moxham and Quarter final against Bill & Maureen
Higginson; while the Whitehouses had a semi final against Ray & Wendy Holmes
and a quarter final against Liam Howard & Irene Murray.
The final was
played in stormy conditions but still produced an excellent standard of
bowling. With Mo Mills leading consistently on long marks the Millsy’s
always maintained a comfortable lead through out the match and eventually
ran out at 21-12.
The King Alfred
Committee would like to thank Peter McDowell of Barrow Central Joiners for
his sponsorship and everyone who helped on the day.

WHITEHOUSE CLAIMS COUNTY MERIT CROWN
31st March 2007
Tony Whitehouse won the Cumbria Senior Merit
held today at Heversham Bowling Club, beating Roy Moxham in the final.
On a green unfamiliar to the vast majority of the 34-strong field, many
bowlers found the conditions hard to master. Whitehouse played
consistently all day especially on the longer lengths, beating Ian Nicholson
in the quarters 21-13 and Barry Lowden in the semis 21-13.
In the final, it was nip 'n tuck early on, before Tony forged ahead 16-7.
A dogged fightback by Roy and 3 or 4 loose ends from Tony saw the gap
narrowed to 13-16. It wasn't to be for the BAE man though, Tony played
a great bowl to re-claim the jack and again went away on his favourite
corner-to-corner mark. Final score 21-14.
This is Tony's third victory in this event; the first one being 20 years ago
in 1987. Both Tony and Roy qualify for the All England Championships
being held in Wolverhampton on Saturday 28th July. Tony's win also
gives him a place in the prestigious 'Champion of Champions' event at the
Waterloo Hotel in Blackpool.

STRONG ARM OF THE LAW
25th March
Lindal's Graham Law took the honours in the first singles competition of
the season, beating Andy Thornton in the final of the King Alfred Charity
Singles Competition.
Thornton beat his long-time doubles partner Tony Whitehouse in the
semi-final, while Law beat Paul Curwen.
Earlier on, Maureen Higginson caused the day's big sensation in beating Bill
Burgess on her way to the quarter-finals.
Well done to Keith Mills and Dave Whitehead for their hard work in running
the comp smoothly, and mention must also be made of the fantastic playing
surface; the Alfred looks like being one of the best greens in the area
again this year.
