The Furness Crown Green Bowling Association staged the second round of matches in the Rigby Taylor sponsored Federation of Crown Green Bowls,  Junior/Youth leagues last Sunday.

The day was overcast and with a cool wind was better for playing than spectating.  The event, held on the Roose Cons bowling greens was well supported by both Furness and travelling supporters.

The Furness juniors played extremely well, winning all four of their matches on the day.  Despite doing this, they only finished second on the day to reigning champions Heavy Woollen.

Furness beat Leeds 6-3 in their opening match, then followed with wins against East Lancashire 8-1 and Fylde 7-2.  This left the local youngsters with the mammoth task of having to beat the Yorkshire team 7-2 to finish group winners.  The task looked a possibility when Furness won three of the first four games off the green. Unfortunately, they could only manage to win one of the remaining games, but won the aggregate point to win 5-4.

This meant that Furness finished three points behind the team from Dewsbury.

Ben Wright and Connor Sharples shared the player of the match award, both winning all four games and having identical records.  Luke Moxham was another contender, also winning all his games in the No 1 position.

Neil Aspinall made a fine debut appearance, winning two of the three games played.  Sisters Lorna and Leanne Rigg (the special ones) also won twice, as did 8 year old Zach Walker.  Daniel Davey, who had to leave after two rounds of matches, and Adam Miller won a game each for Furness.

The youth teams inconsistency of recent seasons let them down once again.  They began with a reasonable result losing 4-5 to a strong Leeds side.  Leeds had opened the day with a 6-3 win over last years champion Heavy Woollen.  Furness then defeated a young East Lancashire side 8-1, before surprisingly losing 2-7 to Fylde.  This left the youths six points adrift of Leeds and four points behind Heavy Woollen and Fylde going into the final round of games.

Leeds beat Fylde 7-2 and Furness defeated Woollen by the same score to take them into second place in the group.  Liam Howard was outstanding for Furness winning all his matches.  Richard Allen also bowled well losing just one game by the narrowest of margins.  Chris Comish making his Furness debut won both of the games he played.  Stewart Turnbull returning from college and short of match practice won twice, as did David Jones, Steven Waugh, James Duffin and Gareth Knowles.

The two other debutants Jack Mitchell and Matthew Lockley failed to record a win, but showed that they possess enough potential to make an impact for the team in games to come.

The Furness crown green bowling committee would like to thank Roose Cons for the use of their two beautiful greens.  They would also like to thank Brian Taylor for running a very successful raffle, and Roose Cons ladies for providing the refreshments throughout the day.

Furness now look forward to the next round of matches, which for them take place on the 3rd June at Lancaster and Morecambe.
